So I think people who left the negative comments misunderstood the premise. It’s bot illegal. The girl herself says in the intro that she’s 18. It’s part of the narrative not just something she fakes in order to be acceptable as a concubine. Also, no one at the palace has even done anything to her yet; so far she’s just engaged to the emporer. Anyway, nothing illegal about it.
Requiring each noble house to send a concubine candidate isn’t that strange. I do agree that the emporer should have done something before so many people have died, but he seems to believe that he’s trapped between keeping the empress and the duke in check. Yeah, he should probably just deal with them and solve all the problems. That would technically make him a tyrant, but it would probably be better than letting them have the control that they do. I’m sure it would cause upheaval in the entire empire and maybe he can’t afford that. But also it seems that he doesn’t quite care for/relate to humans generally so maybe that’s a character growth we’ll see develop stemming from his interactions with fl.
And of course the fl is freakin naive. She lived as a slave. It’s weird to expect someone who lived that way to be cunning and intelligent. I actually think the way she clings to any small kindness and is fiercely and stubbornly loyal to those who’ve shown any kindness to be pretty accurate. She would’ve clung to anyone even those who are awful and only fake being kind to use her but thankfully she fell into the care of better people than that.
Okay enough with my rant but I hate that I can’t trust the comments when I’m trying to decide whether to try a story or not.
Overall, interesting story. There are holes yet, but we’re only 15 chapters in, so that’s to be expected. I like the side characters and it has potential. I just hope it isn’t on eternal hiatus, but it looks like it. I don’t regret reading what’s there though, take that for what you will. It’s still in the setup phase of a story, so if you’re just trying to get a hit of lovey dovey feels, look elsewhere. If you enjoy the little friendly interactions of interesting side characters might as well read this if you have some time to kill.
