I think on the contrary? Once again she is described as a truly ‘noble woman’ She doesn’t have the heart of a warrior like her husband and their children. She endured for 19 years, even preparing her own poison, and don’t treat her children badly (except forcing Ashya to do something she doesn’t like) showing that she is not selfish, no?
She maybe can’t stand seeing them hurt so she decided to get a divorce
It’s not selfish to want the best for your family. It’s also not selfish to leave you children in the care of someone who loves them, especially the other parent, if your life is eating away at your mental health. She spent almost two decades preparing herself for suicide JUST IN CASE the barbarians made it into the castle. She had nerves of steel for a noble, and she couldn’t keep up. Like @Orion22 said, she wasn’t a warrior, and she never treated her family with anything less than love. It was understandable that she was trying to teach Ashya how to be a noble lady, since it’s her status. Mom was doing what she could for her daughter to make sure he wouldn’t have to live the same nerve-wracking life she did, she just didn’t understand that there’s more ways than marrying out to protect her daughter. She DEFINITELY should have done both, and let Ashya learn to defend herself, even if the goal remained to marry her off.
I feel for mom. Stuck between a rock and a hard place. I also wonder if she’s alive. I dont remember if they said whether she’s alive or not.
