Spoiler: In the novel, someone falsely accuse Penelope (I don’t remember the specific, I think the father’s of the girl who mocked her in earlier chapter) in order to bring down Eckart Family. The crown prince were unconscious and Penelope get thrown to jail for a while until Vinter help her to prove her innocence. And yes, Derick is real asshole in the novel too. He’s the only one who still skeptic about Penelope until the end.
So either all those aristocrats were the assassins she shot or the aristocrats purposely created situations to frame Penelope to financially blackmail the Duke. The tea party would make sense since one girl kept purposely antagonizing her about the crossbow. It will be interesting to see what they say to the Duke when he investigates it. Hopefully the prince can settle everything once he gets to camp.

Honestly, finding one little girl shouldn’t be that hard, but i guess it was just carelessnes (I know that it’s quite rare for kipnapped children to return to their parents) but for Yvonne this shouldn’t have been hard as she has unique features (eg: light pink hair), her parents could’ve put up missing posters or announced that she was missing and they would give a reward to whoever could find her and return her to her family. They could’ve described the missing child and even shown them a painting of her if she was difficult to identify (Since her parents loved her dearly, they probably had atleast one painting of her) So in my eyes it was the Dukes carelessness that ended up in this situation.
