A sudden change of behavior isn’t going to convince him she changed. From his perspective, it is just her going back to her old ways. When she brings up that he never asked, he realizes he is in the wrong, but most people will probably do what he did. It is basically the boy who cried wolf scenario. If someone lies and tricks you enough, when it becomes important, you are likely not to believe them either.
