The Empress Katheleyaniera is the clear antagonist, but it’s good to know what her motivation is.
Spoiler! :
Kathe came to the court of the then Emperor and grandfather of Lucretius as a young girl.
There she began to serve him and fell in love with the much older emperor.
This did not go unnoticed by Lucretius’ father and he forced her to become his wife. The emperor at the time did not prevent this. He probably knew nothing of her feelings and thought she was well suited to be empress.
However, this led to Kathe vowing to destroy the imperial family (as the prince kills his father, she is also somewhat successful in this).
Later, when Sabina comes to court, does not have to become the emperor’s wife and is still protected by the prince, this earns her Kathe’s clear enmity.
Kathed’s best scene is later when she learns that Lucretius is the recognized heir of his grandfather.
