In the novel it’s described that he’s currently showing that he cares for her because he often have a dream about her killing herself and in fact the ending of the novel is in reality the first life of jubel and so because he lost her Regis turned back time so it’s their 2nd lives. And to prevent her from committing suicide he’s doing what we’re seeing now
