From my memory of the novel, the pope never abused her, he kind of just neglected her and let Cesare do the abusing. That month where she was sick is indeed where our FL enters her body and, (spoilers ahead), it’s how Cesare figures out later on that our FL is not the original Rudebeckia and tries to kill her to become the supreme ruler of Romana and Brittana.
I love the cardinal sense of humour 😂😂. He is dissing his own nephew that he isn’t functioning properly as a man🤣🤣. And it seems he is genuinely concerned and cares about Ruby🥺
