I think saying “never once” doesn’t really match his wish to be ash. To me, we don’t know what Ash thought but it didn’t seem like he liked her. Don’t know, maybe he was trying to protect her somehow.
Still since we don’t know, he should have said “ever since I went to the Southern front, I had time to think about things. And, I don’t know about before, but I know now that I should protect the people who are mine”.
That way, he isn’t lying. Imagine someone reveals he hated her later down the line? Like from a diary or something.
Also, it’s kinda weird how “smitten” and “innocent” this incredibly wealthy and successful merchant Noble is. I will not be surprised if it turns out she was acting
