I appreciate this story doesn’t turn the childhood friend into another minor antagonist who’s quickly squashed by the MC or ML because she severely overstepped her bounds, but actually gives her an arc to be something other than a future duchess, and her own love interest. It’s like every female character who’s not the MC either has to be an ally or an opponent to be defeated, and usually the latter gets a crummy ending and never grows from their failures, even if they deserve it. But I’m also talking about a genre where almost every cliche has been done to death, so my point is probably moot.
