People hate hunting on principle but hunting events like this were actually important for keeping animal populations under control – the bigger and more dangerous the game, the better the reward – so people with skill would go for bears and wolves helping prevent danger to livestock. It wasn’t an exact science, today large game licenses are given in proportion to the population and they are incredibly expensive – those funds go into further conservation of the area, paying for the guards that counter poachers and for rehabilitation programs.
So while I understand the personal dismay at hunting, please understand that even if an imperfect system, it wasn’t done without consideration to the well-being of the environment.
