   I suspect he’s either blood related via another relative or adoptive (and adoption might be a typical thing in this family since heirs are hard to produce). I suspect the marchioness committed suicide bc the maids and nanny were being loud and wrong about her husband’s activities.

   since that man has the the emotional depth of a spoon, he didn’t catch the dynamics at play and also neither confirmed nor denied any potential allegations. I think he did care for his wife and his daughter to some extent (which is why he somewhat protected their respective images and didn’t just expel them) and the FL didn’t catch that aspect because she was a child and that man is emotionally unavailable by even nobility standards
