I don’t think he’s unhappy with the idea of being king. I think he do wants it, but has since learned to give up after finding out he’s terminally ill. You can tell he has always been earnest with his studies and has shown his love for the people via heroic acts, etc. Being diagnosed with such an illness causes people to feel extremely defeated. Sure, he’s voicing out that he just wants to spend the remainder of that time learning more about her and spending time with her. And that his goal is a bit different now because he’s trying to accommodate with what little time he has remaining, but we can’t disregard his efforts towards being king. It’s one thing if he changed his mind about it before becoming ill, but that’s not the case. He’s only started to entertain such thoughts after the diagnosis.
