When he is back from the war, he is a different person and since they don’t have good communication, they don’t talk and they have never know each other feeling or view. Not to mention that everyone also misjudged the wife and he doesn’t know anything.
In the new timeline, he didn’t go to war and spend time with her.
Rather than just because he is shy, he also get traumatized with the war that worsen their relationship.
