I feel like the mother-in-law and the head maid are the real villains here. I can’t be too sure about the emperor yet, but my gut tells me the MIL probably didn’t want to lose her position as the madam of the duchy so she schemed a lot of things. It didn’t help that FL (in the past life at least) was scared and didn’t know anything and MIL took advantage of that. (I did not read the novel btw, this is just my hunch).
