I just want to make clear that this is *NOT* hate, but a friendly challenge to the basic assumptions you made in your argument. You argue that: the FL is also at fault here because 1.) she’s old enough to speak for herself and so if she doesn’t, it’s on her, and 2.) Her parents are not evil so if she takes the initiative to try and communicate, then things will improve.
And to 1.) I would agree to a certain extent – with the assumption that the FL was nurtured enough to be able to develop a healthy sense of self. Unfortunately, I think we can argue that the FL was neglected from when she was a child, and was not provided enough self esteem to develop a healthy sense of self to even voice. I mean, her immediate reaction is: I must be selfish to be asking this or to be wanting this, or to have these negative feelings. That’s a form of gaslighting and is full on abuse. And to expect the same healthy reaction from a neglected and abused child, as you would a normal healthy child, I would argue, is a bit lacking much. I would also like to add on, that if you read the story carefully, you will notice that the FL tried to communicate with her parents in the past. Repeatedly, even, and has repeatedly failed. So then I have to ask, how many times should a person try to reach out to someone for understanding before they give up?
2.) To your argument that her parents are not evil so things should improve once she communicates with them, I would say…*sigh*…that you, @KVeeH00, were probably raised in a very healthy and loving family. And to that, I am very happy for you. But the assumption that parents have to be full-on, inherently evil to be neglectful or even abusive to their child is not realistic at all. The type of neglect that I’m assuming you’re thinking of – not enough food, not enough water, left in an abandoned hut alone to fend for him/herself at the age of 5 – is not what most of neglect or abuse looks like. In this scenario, her parents not only didn’t realize she had some amazing talent in art, but didn’t realize that her child was dying. So I ask you, if your sibling or your mother/father was dying of a sickly disease, would you eventually notice even if they didn’t say anything?

I don’t think her parents are evil. This is all one big miscommunication in both party. If she voiced out what she really thought and nothing changes then that’s when she should really go but that’s just me.
