I disagree with Skite too. Mr, Dalton saw that Miss Lance was trying to stop her friend from badmouthing Miss Padleton and assumed she was the right one to ask for information about the woman he has interest on. He did not mean anything bad. Plus, Miss Lance wasn’t a refreshing character. She used to call Miss Padleton an old maid and her mother scold her for it. She was the usual gossipy community but with elegant air around her. She herself has a distort opinion abt Miss Padleton and assume Mr. Dalton would look down on Miss Padleton bcs of her upbringing. This means she herself has that kind of opinion abt Miss Padleton’s background in the first place. Not just that, she stopped her friend from badmouthing Miss Padleton not because Miss Padleton was her friend but because she knew Mr. Dalton would disapprove of it. Miss Lance herself said she glad she made the right judgement in stopping her friend.
I like Miss Lance. It’s refreshing they didn’t turn her into a nasty, one dimensional, harpy. She seems like a good and kind person, just young and therefore overly influenced by her parents into ignoring Mr. Dalton’s disinterest. I’m not super impressed with Mr. Dalton right now. That was Miss Pendleton’s matter, and if he respected her he would have ignored it or spoken to her directly. He keeps giving off the impression that he’s constantly testing her to check that she’s this pure tradwife super woman he envisions as ideal. And he wants a bundle of opposites. She must be brilliant and intelligent-but sweet and modest. Beautiful-but no former boyfriends. Social- but a homebody. Noble and high class-but dependant. Proud- but willing to put up with his disrespectful BS. He hasn’t given the full ick yet, but he’s creeping up there.
