@SoftToast – It’s the same with The Problematic Prince. Reading the first few chapters of the manhwa made me despise Bjorn. But reading the novel, it is clear that he actually loved Erna quite from the beginning, despite not realizing it himself. A lot of his inner talk shows how much he cares about Erna but it wasn’t expressed properly in the manhwa
At the beginning, I didn’t care for Heiner’s past when I was reading the novel. But after a few chapters I couldn’t help but being fascinated by it. The author does a really good job of displaying emotions and trauma, and how it can mess a person’s mind.
It doesn’t justify Heiner’s actions, but at least you understand why his thoughts and actions are so contradicting.
I don’t know If the manhwa will be able to capture the nuances of the characters, since it cuts lots of internal dialogue.
I guess this my excuse to recommend the novel. It’s so worth it.

her dad was a good father, but a horrible person
it doesnt justify the male lead hating her and wishing her eternal suffering, but it provides insight on why he hated the country/her dad
so ofc when he sees the daughter of his worst enemy living the perfect life and facing no hardships when her dad made him into a human weapon and a dog he would hate her
im not trying to whitewash the male lead but you can’t judge everything objectively because thats just not how it works and he needed a place to vent all his anger after the coup bc everyone else was dead.
obv he was a piece of shit to the female lead and she should def not get back with him (even tho she probably will) but it’s not like he had no reason to hate her
pair that with his love for her + hate towards his enemy’s daughter + never learning how to manage/understand/regulate emotions = he fucked up
and is he did those horrible things to fl because of this? did the fl tell him to join? did the fl beat him, bullied him, no matter what ama hate him for now. nobody convince me.
