@CLEare I don’t think the author was ever trying to justify his actions, but is instead trying to show Annette’s regrets about the relationship she had with the ML. She has become more aware of how sheltered she was from the world and as a nurse, she’s seen the detrimental effects of war such as the lack of humanity from those soldiers. From my perspective, she’s gained a bit of an understanding of what the ML has gone through and feels that she wasn’t reliable as she should have been as his lover and regrets not seriously listening or taking into account what he had to say.
Again, I love this story because I like Annette as a character. I get ML went through some horrible shit, but I hate how they keep making it seem like Annette had ANY kind of blame. It’s hard to read this when it written like it’s Annette’s fault, and I still refuse to ‘justify’ what the ML did to her just because of some fucked up concept of revenge.
