The wording of the prompt is (X+3)+5=42 not (X+3)+((X+3)+5)=42.
According to your new equation, Oscar would be 34 and in the manhwa, he’s 17 as he’s the youngest tower master or whatever it was.
So according to your equation, Oscar is 34, the mum is 37 since she’s 3 years older, and the Dad is, 42 since he’s + 5.
Instead of saying that my equation renders the prompt false,
I would also argue it’s impossible for a child to have an age difference of 3 years with their mum.
I think Oscar is 17, like the manhwa and I concluded, and his mum would be 20+17 = 37.
Because that age difference makes more sense than the 3 years you’re trying to force.
Dad’s given age – mum’s new age is 42-37= 5.
The way I read the equation is the correct method.
At least from what I remember in class sometimes the answer didn’t make sense in context to the question, the question was there to test your ability to correctly form an equation.
The fact that there’s a 3 year age difference between son and mother is a clue that this is probably this kind of question. Also the fact that Oscar should be around 17 according to the story.
@Elijah7 but then the answer to the mother’s age would be 20 because she is 3 years older, and the father is 5 years older than her and would be 25. But the value for the father’s age is given as 42.
you can do what ever you want with the numbers but in doing so you made the prompt false. The prompt is that the mother *IS* 3 YEARS older and the father *IS* 5 YEARS older than her. The father is also FACTUALLY 42 YEARS old. The wording of the prompt is (X+3)+5=42 not (X+3)+((X+3)+5)=42.
OSCAR MANUEL!!! LA MANUELA!!! 🗣>A< (sorry, his name sounds like a Latin telenovela name 😂)
Btw it’s ironic how every protagonist that transmigrates or reincarnates in another world always ended up in a world full of magic and lots of magic capabilities. But usually the people in that world are pretty dumb when it comes to math and science 😂. (Algebra, Physics… etc).
So the most probable thing is that the translation missed 2 times and 3 years older instead of just 3 years older. That would make it 17 instead of 34 that we all got. which is also why there was multiplication

Easy peasy

There’s nothing wrong with the translation.
A mother is 3 years older than Oscar Manuel and the father is 5 years older than the mother.
If the father is 42, calculate Oscar’s age.
Answer:
Let Oscar Manuel’s age be X.
(X) Oscar’s age + Mother’s age (X+3) + 5 = (42) The father’s age.
Basically according to the question, both Oscar’s and the mother’s age can be contained within the father’s, that’s why it’s = to.
So altogether, X+X+3+5 = 42.
2X + 8 = 42.
2X= 42-8
2X=34
X=34÷2
X=17.
Whenever you take the 2 the other side, multiplication [2X, that is, 2×X], also transforms to division.
Idk what this box method they’re using is.

the way i came rushing to the comments when she said seventeen. Thank god im not the only one who thought i was trippin😭
MaryMagdalene4239
OH MY GOD i swear i was tripping, thank goodness the comments agree… i literally love how we all actually did it, go team 🙂
Binicallisto
I got 34 tho …..
Purplebritt
Pretty sure the whole math problem wasn’t translated. Though it bugs me, I’ll have to just take it as it is🙂↔️

I love how we all went back to check the question to see if we read it wrong, did they f up the translation and wrote it wrong?
SyaSya
Ermm. The real equation is like : x – (5+3)=42, right?? 🙄🙄
caccac
I may need to go back to school, thought that was a simple subtraction question and not solve for x

No matter how I look that’s not the answer….. 🤨🗿
Davincilover
Isn’t the answer 34 or am I tripping?
soff_toofbrush
@aera aera , so it’s 2 * [ ] = 34. you divide both sides by 2. so the box remains at the left side. it will become [ ] = 34 / 2

WHEERE DID THE DIVISION COME FROM?
