The FL is 24. Everyone knows she’s 24 and they don’t keep that she is 24 a secret. Something happened to make her look 8. For the most part, she acts 24 and they treat her like she’s 24. Her new family is filled with people used to eccentrics with magic powers, so they don’t really blink at this situation being weird, which feels a bit uncanny to read. So far, it appears the regression is short term and temporary (think 3 months) and seems to be primarily used by the author as a therapy device and social lubricant. Our FL has significantly underdeveloped social skills and no experience with family ties. Her looking 8 buys her a lot of grace and leeway in both directions. For example, it’s cute and endearing when a little kid is shy, overly honest, awkward, or overwhelmed, so even though she would act like this anyways, the people around her give her some slack she wouldn’t be getting if she looked 24. Additionally, being small and looking 8 makes the FL more accepting of their affection and generosity. They would be feeding her cakes and making her dresses anyways, but since she thinks they’re doing it because that’s what you do with children, she accepts their gifts and gestures of affection without her guard up, and her small size also makes them freer with physical affection, such as hugs, which they wouldn’t be if she were a full adult.
