In the original novel the Cardinal actually does like Lucrezia. There’s a lot of little details that fill in and foreshadow later that get dropped by the manhwa. If you’re looking for the other character’s thoughts and more nuance to everyone, 100% I recommend reading the novel. In this part in particular, it mentioned how the cardinal thought he didn’t love his mistress, but upon seeing her return in those tattered clothes looking so sad it broke his heart.
The fact a cardinal let his wife doing witchcraft come back is amazing. And how is it all these men have such short memories. It’s not like he likes his wife yet he keeps “forgetting” her mistakes and swayed so easily
