   I once did a museum tour based on the frames. It was super interesting. Large art museums have an entire specialist department just for framing, and framing itself is rather complicated. Some artists make their own frames or commission ones specially, older paintings may not have their originals anymore, so you have to decide if you’ll restore a contemporary frame or get a modern one, the different frame shapes and motifs actually mean different things, and you have to decide if you’ll suit the frame to the piece, the room, or try for a balance.
