The deal: the FL is a noble orphan picked up by a jerk Duke in order to train her into being the perfect bride for his grandson, the ML.
The duke’s son (the ML’s dad) had run off and married a commoner woman before having the ML and dying young and tragically. The Duke wants to avoid this repeating by marrying his grandson to a perfect and noble bride, keeping them all close to home, and controlling everything.
The Duke is on the harsh and oblivious side. He truly doesn’t see that the stuff he does to get his way causes lasting damage. He will thoughtlessly threaten the ML’s mom to ensure the ML’s compliance, and not get how that damages his grandson’s ability to trust and like him. He also doesn’t see that the FL does everything to suit his tastes exactly not because she does so naturally or because she loves and wants to please him, but because he has made her terrified she’ll be kicked out with nothing if he’s even slightly unhappy. He may actually love them, but doesn’t seem the full extent of the damage he’s done with his forceful nature since he is kept happy with all of his needs and wants met.
Anyways, the FL has a necklace memento from her dead parents which contains a mirror which allows her to see the future a total of three times and no more.
On the first peek, she sees the girl who has always hung onto the ML gloating and telling her to hand over her child. This woman says she’s the ML’s lover and will be taking over from now on. She says the FL has an incurable illness and is no longer suitable to be the duchess, so the ML is replacing her with his mistress.
The ML has also seen a moment of the future in the mirror and it is this same woman telling him that the FL has run away and abandoned him and their child.
From here, the misunderstandings begin.
The ML doesn’t want to love the FL, because he doesn’t want to give his grandfather the satisfaction and because he believes she will run away one day. The FL is too terrified of the grandpa Duke to take any of the ML’s offered escapes, plus she loves the ML, so she plans to marry, avoid having a child, wait for the Duke to die, and then leave. She is confused and worried about the illness thing, but not overly much.
The ML takes the FL’s lack of expression even when invited to give her opinion, her refusal of his offers to escape marrying him and her willing acceptance of his ridiculous proposals that he never touch her as proof she doesn’t love him, she just wants to be a duchess, and this pisses him off.
The FL doesn’t feel like she has any choice in accepting or refusing anything at all, basically, and takes the ML’s lack of expressiveness and desire as proof he doesn’t love her and will be having a mistress, which makes her sad.
It’s a giant, snarled mess between two taciturn, expressionless people who are far too quiet and controlled for actual emotional honesty.

**spoiler if people want to genuinely read this depresso show do continue bcs it’s only getting worse and the misunderstandings prolong & are cleared late game only for a bit.. same as for romance a bit.. ofc 2nd ml seems so much better but here we are.. i might pick this up again when they complete the series 💀 (I didn’t read the novel. these are the comments I’ve heard..). I swear WHOS rating these 5stars?? I wasted an hour going thru this. (Disclaimer for others)
