It’s a defensive mechanism. She said that with a double purpose. One is so she would not expect things and afraid to get hurt again. The other one is to give him a choice not to take responsibility for her. So ML needs to be more proactive in this kind of relationship. She needs time to move on.

The men’s different tactics are interesting. Mincheol was successful because he cheerfully stomped past her walls and settled in to stay. The benefit of this was a quick bond that was very solid and comfortable while Mincheol remained secure that she liked him, but which became shaken when he lost confidence since she isn’t expressive. This guy is using a push-pull withdrawal method. He pushes past her walls, drops some emotional stuff, and then retreats back in the hopes that she’ll be lured out. The cost of this is that it doesn’t always work and he has to keep returning to breach the walls again and retreat again and hope she’ll follow him out just little bit further in order to get another hit of his attention; This method also means she is insecure and off balance: she cannot tell if he likes her or means what he says, which gives her anxiety. But the benefit is that (if it works) it will break some of her worse habits of not communicating and being passive.

There’s also the aspect of her still coming off her sole relationship that ended in with him stepping out along with his age and her not knowing much about him. He’s going at her pace and her sole experience in relationship is Mincheol so on some level, she’s waiting for him to push like her ex did and retreating because of the mentioned insecurity and being off balance.
