Different circumstances and such. At least here it’s understandable. The father has trust issues (for good reasons), and he and his family are in a vulnerable position where they can’t afford to make mistakes, and people around them have no quarrel with manipulating and discarding them for their own personal use. You can see it with his reaction of the sacred stone. He doesn’t know Ellie or the Duke, so considering how rare and valuble sacred stones are, he’s concerned that the Duke was intending to use the stone to manipulate (and honestly he’s not wrong, since Ellie also intended to manipulate him, albeit for his benefits) him in order to make him a puppet.
While he loves and trusts his daughter, he also doesn’t want to burden her, which is why he distanced himself from his daughter, since he hoped to provide her a safe and stable living environment for her to grow up in.
Long story short, in the world that they live in where betrayals happen at a blink of an eye, communicating alone isn’t going to solve or handle things. Observational skills and power are just as important, if not more important.

I will never understand adults who can’t figure out that communicating is the best way to handle things. I knew this at the age of 13.
