It’s so weird to read these comics. I love them, don’t get me wrong, but the society they depict is so completely not-european, and yet the aesthetics are at the same time very European.
Just off the top of my head:
– Knights are a social class, typically members of the peerage as the lowest nobles. They’d not be street patrols. The term for professsional soldiers would vary, but titles such as Sergeant, Man-at-Arms or Gentilhômmes des Armes (or as they’re called today, Gendarmes) would be appropriate. Yes, the French organization that sends busloads of heavily armed people to ruin criminals’ days comes from the Middle Ages, and can trace their roots back to the Hundred Years War.
– The idea that a criminal organization exists and bothers nobles is insane. Now, this is clearly not a feudal society, it’s clearly Renaissance-ish, and probably soon after the Black Death. This makes the farmers/peasants (one is a job, the other is a social class), being beholden to the mafia completely insane, the farmers had a lot of money, and they could very much afford to band together in proper weapons and armour and ride down any idiot trying to exploit them like this. Sure THIS farmer might not be powerful, but he has a family, a church and a social circle who will back him up and they’ll go and kill the idiots who tried to get him like that.
– Oh, it will be difficult to find where mafia (red fangs) are? Capture one alive, hand him over to the executioner. Don’t worry, after the executioner has gotten all his questions answered, he will be able to patch him up well enough that he can be taken to the justice square and executed. the priest will be available for a confession too. He won’t get a nice death, like decapitation by sword. He’ll be hung and strangled, or drowned, or something similar. This is challenging the authority of the government, and that will be dealt with painfully, publically and embarassingly. The government will show everyone what happens when you try your luck. Especially at times (like 1450s-1700 or so) where there were plenty of areas between cities were law enforcement was ill equipped to enforce the law. You operating within the city gates is going to make everyone more angry at you. You would be found and dealt with.
That being said, this is still a fun series, it’s just that it’s clearly an Asian culture with European aesthetics, and that’s a bit weird, because you get surprised a lot about how things work. I’m not trying to be a hating hater who hates. 😉
