I do think the Earl’s family has done her dirty. The communist dude was the sister’s friend and was only able to extort help and silence from our FL because everyone was trying to get the missing sister’s location. Protecting the sister’s reputation also prevented FL from giving a full and accurate account, which hobbled her ability to defend herself (without being able to say “I was worried for my missing friend” there aren’t many explanations she can give as to why she kept going back in the basement to help that don’t make her seem like a commie sympathizer) It’s only right they pay for her lawyer, but they should have gone further and made her whole for the damage since she suffered it for their sister’s sake. But they didn’t even try to find her a new job or situation, and hung her out to dry. I get that the Earl is butthurt and thinking that letter is a goodbye, but it is pretty egregious they didn’t do anything at all, and none of the other family members, including the sister, tried to reach out with money or references.
This story is always so hard for me to read, feeling like I wanna shake the female protagonist half of the time but at the same time I understand whyshe is like that… but at the rate she is growing… she is gonna start being happy when she turns 80…
