She’s not dumb, she’s 15. At that age you don’t really view your teachers as possible friends, just as someone who has authority over you when it comes to learning. On top of that she’s got a lingering fear of him since he’s tied to ‘her’ death, and there’s a disconnect between viewing him as a person and not a character that she’ll have to get over if she tries to be a friend.
It’s pretty telling that she doesn’t have any friends yet – shows that she’s yet to immerse herself in the world much at all and keeps people who aren’t in her immediate circle at an arms length because to her they’re not ‘real’ yet.
