Maxi eventually spills the beans of her past ONCE RIFTAN HAS GAINED HER TRUST. He actually witnesses it (spoiler alert from another fam out there in the net) which leads the truth to speak out for itself.

Both Riftan and Maxi have their fair share of scars and trauma and those are the source of their inferiority complex. And they were both very inexperienced in relationship & communication prior to their union, hence the piled up misunderstandings. Maxi was raised differently from her sister, mostly because she was considered a failure by her father – one of which because of her stuttering. So she didn’t get the proper education that her sister got, nor her privileges. She lost her mom since she was very young, and nobody in the Croix castle was on her side; even her nanny abused her. She was raised to be submissive, treated as a burden. And she was tortured mentally and physically, healed only to be abused again, and nobody during that period was there to console her. Now, those who called her dimwit, can you figure out how to get out of that situation, in the setting of that era, if you were in her shoes? She’s not an OP character with a lot of buffs and plot armors. IMO she’s one of the most realistic characters in fantasy manhwa ever. Meanwhile, Riftan had a very rough life as well. He practically survived on his own, saved by his will to survive. He’s seen Maxi when she was like 8yo maybe – iirc – and in his eyes, she was the most beautiful fragile creature, living sheltered and pampered in a place so high beyond his reach. That’s why he put her in a high pedestal, almost like worship her. He longed for her, but he realize she was way out of his league, and that is the source of his insecurity. He felt like he needs to pour Maxi with all the wealth and convenience in the world to be on par with the duchy of Croix’s standard. And mind you, he never has gotten involved with women his entire life, except for his mentally ill mother who eventually gave him trauma by hanging herself to death. Growing up bigger than his peers and living as mercenary since teenager, he was exposed to rough adult environments since his early years, where his physique attracted adult females who tried to seduce him one way or another, not realizing that’s the body of a teenager, basically a kid. That’s another kind of trauma added. That was why he avoided women, and specifically despised the aggressive ones. Now imagine being Maxi, being neglected and stomped on your entire life, realizing how shameful that is, and then receiving such abundant love and affection and high regards form Riftan and the entirety of Anatol, and realize that they have this misconception of how you have lived your life… would you be able to easily confess that you have actually lived like trash before? Nah, I doubt it.
I, too, used to feel frustrated reading the first half of the book 1 of the novel, but when you see the backstory, it all makes sense. And considering the time setting, it makes even more sense. They were joining as 2 strangers with stark differences and lots of scars and traumas, but they eventually learn how to understand each other… it just take a bit longer that you’s expect it, lol. And brace yourself to be frustrated a bit more, since this hasn’t even got to the half of book 1.. it’s stil a long, looong way to go ( and feel frustrated )… lol.
Maxi hasn’t just been emotionally abused- she was also physically abused, repeatedly, and had her injuries healed with magic. Over and over again. That sort of treatment stays with you for life. I’m not surprised she hasn’t revealed it to Riftan; she probably thinks that he’ll abandon her if he finds out that she isn’t the sheltered princess he wants her to be.
And how exactly is she supposed to build her skillset if nobody lets her learn? Riftan needs to get his head out of his ass. If he actually loves her- and doesn’t just see her as a sex object, he should listen to her and let her do what she can.
Both Ruth and Agnes are in favour of Maxi learning magic. Riftan’s the only one against it, and while he may have had a genuine concern for her health she’s being careful now and he’s being needlessly smothering.
I see in the comments that some are supporting the ml and some the fml, but I can see both perspectives. Riftan wants her to have the best of everything and live the life of comfort he believes she deserves. So for her to take on responsibilities and push herself too hard, and then not tell him anything makes him anxious because he wants her to be safe and cared for. Maxi on the other hand has been emotionally abused most of her life which has given her severe self-esteem issues, so she feels the only way to be the wife Riftan deserves is to do her responsibilities the best she can, because otherwise she will feel like she’s worthless. Of course the main problem is the miscommunication that’s going on here, that neither side understands how the other feels. Riftan would understand how Maxi feels if she told him about the abuse, but she’s too afraid to or she thinks that she deserves it because she’s not enough in her eyes. Likewise Maxi would understand how Riftan feels if he let go of his pride and tell her how he feels, which for most of history is not something men are encouraged to do.
Watching the scene of their fight is very interesting because you can implicitly see their viewpoints and moods change. Riftan starts out very irritated, and while Maxi tries at first to be calm and collected, you can see for the first time in the story she is getting irritated and angry as the conversation continues. You can see by her expression that she is getting very angry with Riftans accusations. And then things fall apart when the princess comes into the conversation. Maxi makes a good point about why shouldn’t she use her magic when the princess does, but Riftan bites back with his retort. His intention was to point out that Maxi shouldn’t compare herself to the princess because Maxi is a novice while the princess is a master when it comes to magic, but what Maxi hears is that she who is useless could never compare to the princess who is amazing. You can see from the next panel that Riftan realizes what he just said hurt her and tries to back off, but the damage is already done. It’s a nice scene because things are coming to a head.
Also love the fact that Riftans second in command is sitting in the background eating popcorn and just enjoying the drama unfolding in front of him. It isn’t until Riftans retort about the princess that he feels awkward. It’s funny just watching everyone be the peanut gallery .
it is about fucking time she got mad at him for ignoring her. i know he wants her to live a life of comfort but if this is what it takes to get him to fucking apologize to her it’ll actually keep me reading. (i know she’s a victim of severe abuse so im really proud of her for standing up for herself! it would be so scary but it does especially seem like he likes her for warming his bed and not much else since that is what they do every other chapter!)

4. After telling him about the menstrual cycle, not even a month has passed. Doesn’t she realise what a worry wort her husband is ? Atleast tell him first and honey coat him with words of will or wanting to become strong and not be weak anymore!!!!! She just straight up has the face to hide it from him.
5. Chapter 89 is the latest and their in a quarrel, but Fl is yet to tell Ml that she did not live that ‘cherished princess’ life !! Ml wouldn’t be this overprotective if she did tell him !
