Judging from the stepmother’s backstory, this is a society that is run by men and women do not have permission to do what they please. They need permission to work, are told who to marry. She can’t leave her household because she is a noble daughter and her mother and father would never allow it. If she was a maid, she would be employed, have permission to work and could leave, but as their daughter I doubt they want to advertise they treat a member o the family like this by having her work elsewhere. It’s okay in her own house where no one really knows her face outside when she does errands and only a few nobles know. If she fights back, and gets thrown out, she’ll likely fall into poverty or prostitution without a reference. What I’m saying is, it’s not easy to fight back or take oppertunities.
