Well it’s sad but I saw that coming. Looking at another perspective and with the mindset of Claude, knowing that a lot of nobles still supported the previous emperor, if left alive and given time, Athanasius may find the opportunity to do treason and rebel again. Though we know that he was controlled by the soul of the 1st emperor, but we’re not 100% sure if he was totally controlled and he had no any inkling to steal the throne. So for Athanasia’s sake and the empire’s peace, to avoid any future repercussions, it’s justly wise to give a capital punishment. Afterall for many years prior to the event of the whole story, the former emperor was already dead (supposedly). Not everything must have a happy ending. RIP to one of the most handsome villains ever.
