Yes based on what i read on the novels, he was utterly consumed by his obsession with Shuri. While he hid behind the shield of divine doctrine, his true turmoil stemmed from the belief that Shuri was the very temptation leading him astray from his path. In a desperate move, he offered her a ‘haven’—insisting she flee with him to find sanctuary under his protection within the Church

I’m still confused about that freak priest’s goal, if I’m not mistaken it’s because he’s obsessed with Shuri, right?

Nah, I don’t think so. Like we saw in his flashback he survived something that he shouldn’t and this experience was for him a prove of a divine intervention. So he dedicated his live to the church and wants the church to gain the highest authority so as he said he needs the aristocracy (the secular power) to be less powerful than the church. It doesn’t really have anything with Shuri personally, she’s just in the power circle that is the obstacle to it. But if I remember correctly there was some insinuation that he takes into consideration that she could be a regressor which would make her the other special person who experienced the divine intervention. I actually like him to be honest. I mean he’s interesting and well written character.
