Agree with JSAUCE that the ML has truly terrible decision making skills and never takes ownership or responsibility for his choices.
If he really wanted to marry the princess, he should have publicly owned it and stuck it out. I can’t even remember why he needed a placeholder–was it something dumb, like his mom was pressuring him? He waited as long as he had and there was an end date in sight!
And letters are a thing which exist! Why hasn’t he been in regular communication with the princess? He supposedly loves her so much, yet he has zero qualms allowing her to misunderstand, nor with her taking the “lesser” position of being his second wife. It is making it seem like JSAUCE is correct that the story is angling in such a way that the Duke has wanted out of a situation he felt pressured into, while being too chicken to admit he was in too far. And instead of owning that decision and fixing things, he resorted to self sabotage and passive-aggressive lashing out (ex: making the princess misunderstand on purpose and she’ll be forced into an undesirable second wife position as ‘punishment’ if she goes through with marrying him when he doesn’t want her to) He’s like those men who want to break up, but also don’t, so they just start avoiding you and being mean until you dump them.

I’m not sure if that’s truly the intent of the author, but that’s a very interesting take, Skite. In any case, if I were to have qualms about the plot, it would be how foolish his decision was to start a contract relationship with someone while waiting for Princess Sofina. There really was no point in having someone stand in as a placeholder. He could have just held out and dismissed the other nobles’ remarks or wishes. He has had terrible decision-making from the very beginning and continued to make poor choices thereafter. When you think about it, even if there’s the off chance that he and Sofia were truly waiting for each other, wouldn’t it have been unfair for Sofina to go back and find out that Irer has another woman—despite their promise. It feels like a cop out that the author’s now making it look like Irer never truly had feelings for Sofina in the first place and that he was just “pressured” into being the perfect man for her. He dragged poor Claire into his messy business and unfairly asked her to “Hey, let’s play house and pretend we’re together while I wait for the woman I promised a future with.” Idc if he has fallen for Claire now. I just feel sorry for Claire.

Hmmm….mixed feelings. It makes sense that he discovered it’s great to have a wife rather than be the wife in a relationship. That other person is doing most of the emotional effort and providing support so you can shine from the background–almost everyone would want and benefit from a wife. Totally natural that he’d realize “oh wow, this is so much easier and more comfortable than me having to try so hard, while someone else gets the benefit.” And yeah, you shouldn’t have to feel like you never measure up in a relationship. But….. I also don’t like that he’s basically picked his current wife because she is the easy path. She has had to shoulder a ton of BS and crushing emotional garbage in the name of making his life smoother, which has flown over his head. And I don’t like that the ambitious, trailblazing woman is being shafted as difficult and demanding because the Duke not being interested in supporting her anymore means she is “unfeminine”.
